Wheat has been added to Borrowdale Park’s farming menu, in addition to potatoes. Both crops were being reaped during the last race meeting, and Gary de Jong reports that a record harvest is likely. This is good news because maintaining the racecourse remains an expensive exercise.
The Debra Swanson yard was firing again on Saturday, winning the first two races on the Borrowdale card, as well as the Sunshine Cup.
King’s Crown (above) scored for Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe,V Patel and D K Ward in the 1200m Maiden Plate with Kevin Derere riding.The three-year-old colt beat Hartenbos by 1.25 lengths.
Next up was River Power (Nyamagwete) for the Centaur Syndicate. He finished 1.50 lengths clear of Karvani in the 1700m Classified Stakes.

The Thomas Mason trained Action Zone led from start to finish at Borrowdale on Saturday, when winning the 1450m Middle Stakes.
Craig Danckwerts owns the 5-year-old Canford Cliffs gelding who has now won 7 races. Mathew Thackeray was in the irons this time.

Guerra, a four-year-old gelding by Lancaster Bomber (USA) and bred by Drakenstein Stud, won the 1260m MR 84 Handicap, impressively, at Borrowdale Park on Saturday.
Nathan Klink was riding and Guerra is owned by Messrs A Dixon, R S Dyer, S N Buchan, N Evans, G de Jong, M K Chant, Bryn Ressell, R Sherwood, P Annesley,D C Samuels and S W Shutt.

Stable Companions Abayyaan (Syster) and Jaeger Moon (Nyamagwete) fought out the finish of the 1600m Sunshine Cup at Borrowdale Park on Saturday – winning margin a quarter of a length.
Abayyaan, by Vercingetoris and bred by Mr M K Ahmed, took the honours. He is owned by Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe, V Patel & D K Ward, G M Littleford, S H Murray, P C Rugg and M W Smith, and several of those owners also have shares in Jaeger Moon. Debra Swanson was the winning trainer.

There is racing at Borrowdale Park this Saturday and the feature is the 1600m Sunshine Cup, where only four runners have stood their ground.
The field includes recent Republic Cup winner, Jaeger Moon, and Abayyaan, Ideal View and Wantage, all of whom finished behind Jaeger Moon that day. Morgan Nyamagwete has the ride on Jaeger Moon, and Jeffery Syster will be on Abayyaan. Wantage will be under visiting jockey Nathan Klink, while Norbert Takawira pilots Ideal View.
The first race on the card is due off at noon, and the Sunshine Cup at 14 20.

Var Aglow, owned by the ZimFun Racing Club, won the Commander AirForce of Zimbabwe Sprint at Borrowdale Park on Saturday, in the closest of finishes with Jet Mirage (0.05 lengths).
The 9-time winner, bred by Vanessa Harrison, is trained by Debra Swanson and Nobert Takawira was riding. Congratulations everyone.

The first race at Borrowdale Park tomorrow, Saturday the 12th of October 2024, is off at 12 noon, and the feature race is the 1200m Commander Airforce Of Zimbabwe Sprint.
All the runners will carry 60 kgs, and if you believe in Merit Ratings, then Jet Mirage and Abayyaan (shown here) must be the best bets. That said, this is the first meeting of the Borrowdale 2024/5 racing season; the last race meeting was on July 27th. After such a long break anything could happen.
It should be a fun day, and it will be good to be back racing.

Air Force Day at Borrowdale Park is on Saturday the 12th of October, and the Final Fields have been published on this site. There are five races on the card and the first is off at 12 noon.

Before winning the $55 000 Republic Cup (GR3) with Jaeger Moon, Debra Swanson saddled the winners of the first three races on Saturday’s Borrowdale Park card.
Copper Fire, under Deryl Daniels, won the 1200m Catercraft Maiden Plate for the Centaur Syndicate (nominee Craig Danckwerts).
Daniels was in the irons again when Karvani took the 1600m Air Zimbabwe MR 75 Handicap. Karvani is owned by the Watanga Syndicate (nominee: Sandra Schwartz).
Then, Mathew Thackeray on Red Top, for the Zim Fun Racing Club (nominee C J Smith), won the 1200m Civil Aviation Authority Of Zimbabwe MR 80 Handicap.
Copper Fire is by Willow Magic (AUS) out of a New Approval (IRE) mare, and the two-year-old filly was bred by Blue Karoo Stud.
Karvani, by Coup de Grace (USA) was bred by Klawervlei Stud, while Red Top, bred by Mr D G M Southey is by Red Ray, and this was his fifth win – but the first for ZimFun.

It was a repeat of the 1800mSilver Slipper (L) when the Thomas Mason trained New Galaxy, with Kaidan Brewer up, won the 2000m Zimbabwe Oaks (L) at Borrowdale Park on Saturday – with stable companion Trust Me (Nyamagwete) close behind.
The daughter of New Predator (AUS) now wears Zimbabwe’s Triple Tiara and her happy owners are Mesdames A G Mason, Edith Tapfuma, R A Dorward, S P Moyo & Mr G Tafeni, Messrs D T Machingaidze& Dr R Mhizha. The three-year-old filly was bred by Tawny Syndicate.
It was an exciting finish with Trust Me half a length off at the line and Dark Future (Greyling) 1.25 lengths behind the winner. Jumped A Red (Klink) came fourth.

JAEGER MOON, by Capetown Noir won the Republic Cup (GR3) at Borowdale Park on Saturday the 27th of July 2024. The six-year-old gelding has won two races in Zimbabwe and this was his 10th win overall. He is trained by Debra Swanson, Tristan Godden was riding and Jaeger Moon was bred by Summerhill Stud (Pty) Ltd.
The delighted owners are Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe, V Patel, D K Ward and M W Smith. Minor places to Buster Barnes, Ideal View and Raffles – winning margins 1.25, 1.50 and 0.50 lengths. Abayyaan came fifth.
