Impressive Borrowdale Debut

Pragmatist, owned by the Dalzel Syndicate (Nom: M Moxon), won the 2400m Pinnacle Plate 105 on Sunday by a startling 9 lengths.

By Jackson out of a Silvano mare, the five-year-old gelding has now won three races, having previously raced in Gauteng and KZN. Jeffery Syster was in the irons on Sunday and Debra Swanson now trains Pragmatist (52 kgs) who beat his stable companion Ideal View (60 kgs). Citrusdal and Zazu were further back.

Congrats Gavin

Captive Moon, bred by former Borrowdale Park stalwart Geoff Armitage, won the 1450m MR 85 Handicap on Sunday for trainer Gavin Macleod and his daughter Robyn Macleod.

Morgan Nyamagwete was riding the six-year-old son of Flower Alley (USA) and at the finish Admirals Chance (Syster) was only half a length off the winner.

Futura Filly Scores

There were several tight finishes at Borrowdale Park on Sunday and the first came when Dark Future, by Futura, won the 1450m Maiden Plate, beating Hartenbos by a whisker.

Jeffery Syster rode the winner and Hartenbos was under Morgen Nyamagwete. Dark Future, a four-year-old filly, is trained by Debra Swanson, bred by Drakenstein Stud and is owned by Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe, V Patel and D K Ward.

New Galaxy’s Fifth

The consistent New Predator (AUS) filly, New Galaxy, won the 1700m Classified Stakes at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, with Kaidan Brewer in the irons.

Trained by Thomas Mason, this was her fifth win from 10 starts. The four-year-old was bred by Tawny Syndicate and she is owned by Mesdames A G Mason, Edith Tapfuma, R A Dorward, S P Moyo, and Mr G Tafeni, Mr D T Machingaidze and Dr Ronald Mhizha.

It was a close finish with Karvani (who was conceding 7.5 kgs) only a quarter of a length behind the winner.

Jet Mirage – Just

Top weight Jet Mirage (Syster) narrowly beat Majestic Warrior (Derere) by 0.10 lengths to win the 1260m Borrowdale Sprint on Sunday.  

The six-year-old son of Visionaire (USA) was bred by Lammerskraal Stud and he is owned by Messrs C J Smith, G M Littleford, S H Murray and P C Rugg.

This was the third winner Debra Swanson saddled at Borrowdale Park on Sunday afternoon, having previously won with Dark Future and Pragmatist.

There is racing at Borrowdale Park today, featuring the Borrowdale Sprint over 1260m.

E|ntry to the course is free, and the first race on the card is at 1 p.m.

All Well On Farming Front


Wheat has been added to Borrowdale Park’s farming menu, in addition to potatoes. Both crops were being reaped during the last race meeting, and Gary de Jong reports that a record harvest is likely. This is good news because maintaining the racecourse remains an expensive exercise.

Another Good Day

The Debra Swanson yard was firing again on Saturday, winning the first two races on the Borrowdale card, as well as the Sunshine Cup.

King’s Crown (above) scored for Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe,V Patel and D K Ward in the 1200m Maiden Plate with Kevin Derere riding.The three-year-old colt beat Hartenbos by 1.25 lengths.

Next up was River Power (Nyamagwete) for the Centaur Syndicate. He finished 1.50 lengths clear of Karvani in the 1700m Classified Stakes.

Action Zone All The Way

The Thomas Mason trained Action Zone led from start to finish at Borrowdale on Saturday, when winning the 1450m Middle Stakes.

Craig Danckwerts owns the 5-year-old Canford Cliffs gelding who has now won 7 races. Mathew Thackeray was in the irons this time.

Stidolph Newcomer Looking Good

Guerra, a four-year-old gelding by Lancaster Bomber (USA) and bred by Drakenstein Stud, won the 1260m MR 84 Handicap, impressively, at Borrowdale Park on Saturday.

Nathan Klink was riding and Guerra is owned by Messrs A Dixon, R S Dyer, S N Buchan, N Evans, G de Jong, M K Chant, Bryn Ressell, R Sherwood, P Annesley,D C Samuels and S W Shutt.

Small Field – Fine Finish

Stable Companions Abayyaan (Syster) and Jaeger Moon (Nyamagwete) fought out the finish of the 1600m Sunshine Cup at Borrowdale Park on Saturday – winning margin a quarter of a length.

Abayyaan, by Vercingetoris and bred by Mr M K Ahmed, took the honours. He is owned by Messrs P D Gorringe, S P Gorringe, V Patel & D K Ward, G M Littleford, S H Murray, P C Rugg and M W Smith, and several of those owners also have shares in Jaeger Moon. Debra Swanson was the winning trainer.

We Race On Saturday

There is racing at Borrowdale Park this Saturday and the feature is the 1600m Sunshine Cup, where only four runners have stood their ground.

The field includes recent Republic Cup winner, Jaeger Moon, and Abayyaan, Ideal View and Wantage, all of whom finished behind Jaeger Moon that day. Morgan Nyamagwete has the ride on Jaeger Moon, and Jeffery Syster will be on Abayyaan.  Wantage will be under visiting jockey Nathan Klink, while Norbert Takawira pilots Ideal View.

The first race on the card is due off at noon, and the Sunshine Cup  at 14 20.
