For the second time around

Rock The Country won the US$ 9 500 Breeders Champions Cup, run over 2000m at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, February 8th – for the second year in succession.  By the 1400m mark newcomer to Borrowdale, Two Gun Kid, had established himself as the early leader with Gentle Brook and Killa Man close behind.

Coming into the home straight Killa Man went for the rails and hit the front only to be overtaken by Gentle Brook, who held on gamely until Rock The Country, followed by Orbit War, exploded from midfield – and it was game over.  Rock The Country, partnered by Apprentice Wesley Marwing, won by three lengths.  Orbit War was 1.25 lengths clear of a fast finishing Demitasse, with Gentle Brook in Continue reading

Two winners for Spies

Glastonbury, with Apprentice Collen Storey in the saddle, was an easy winner of the 1100m MR 55 Handicap at Borrowdale Park on February 8. The Right Approach gelding (below) has now completed a hat trick of wins at Borrowdale. He was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and is owned by Messrs F.N. Englezakis and R.P. Macnab,

Later in the afternoon the Corne Spies yard scored again with Amas Amat who beat stablemate Full Court home by three-parts of a length in a 1200m Maiden Plate. Both started at 40/1 and not surprisingly the Pick Six was not won. Both horses are owned by Mr T. Spies and Francois Naude was riding the winner. Amas Amat, by National Emblem, was bred by Klawervlei Stud.

Arrowfield wins convincingly

At the 15th time of asking the A P Arrow filly, Arrowfield, shed her maiden certificate in fine style in the 1600m Maiden Plate for fillies and mares at Borrowdale Park on February 8. Derreck David began moving the filly into contention when approaching the home turn, and soon after the 400m mark it was clear this was Arrowfields’ day.

Arrowfield was saddled by Assistant trainer Penny Fisher of Gee Racing, bred by Northfields Stud (Pty) Ltd, and is owned by Julie Zieve, John Koumides and Robin Bruss.

FIRST RACE, FIRST WIN

When the Horse Chestnut filly, Hunyani, won the 1000m Maiden Juvenile Plate at Borrowdale Park on Sunday it was just the start of a successful afternoon for trainer Bridget Stidolph, jockey Derreck David and part-owner Robin Bruss. Bred by Adv.A.P. Joubert, Hunyani is owned by Alastair Pulford and Robin Bruss. She was Tote Favourite and dominated throughout, despite best efforts from Yesterday Man and Caribbean.

Enjoying the moment

Rock The Country, winner of the Breeders Champions CUp on Sunday, was led in by his trainer Gokhan Terzi with Gengis and Ufuk Goksel. Apprentice Wesley Marwing had the ride. The race was not entirely without incident. Captain’s Tiger was withdrawn by the vet at the start. Copper Bay was slow out of the stalls and then refused to gallop. Orbit War, Demitasse and Gentle Brook filled the minor placings – all carrying less than 54 kgs. The pedometer reading was 22.

A CHANCE FOR THE STAYERS TO SHINE

Owners of staying horses often feel they are left out in the cold at Borrowdale Park, but they have been well looked after today (February 8).  Main race is the US$9 500 Breeders Champions Cup (L) over 2000m which has attracted runners we can expect to see in major events later in the year.

(And wouldn’t it be nice if Gold Circle’s Tab Form woke up to the fact that we race for US$ at Borrowdale, not South African Rands.  At the current exchange rate there is a huge difference between US$ 9500 and R9500.)

Earlier in the afternoon there is a Merit Rated 60 Handicap Continue reading
