Print The Pounds Goes After The Second Leg of Zimbabwe’s Triple Tiara
Zimbabwe’s two top fillies, Print The Pounds and Picalilly, are all set for a rematch in the 1800m GWM Steed 6 (hitherto known as the TBA Silver Slipper (L)) at Borrowdale Park on Sunday. Tempting as it is to regard this as a two-horse race both fillies have yet to try this distance, so perhaps it is not all over bar the shouting.
Print The Pounds, trained by Bridget Stidolph, has won her last four starts, including the Fillies Classic and the Zimbabwe Guineas (Gr3). In December she won a 1700m MR 65 Handicap with some reasonable older horses behind her so the chances are she will go further and do her sire, A P Answer, proud.
Picalilly, a 1.50 lengths second to Print The Pounds in the Fillies Classic, and 0.50 lengths off her in the Guineas, will be hoping to defeat her here. Of Print The Pounds’ seven opponents in this line-up Alyson Wright’s charge has to be considered the most likely to succeed.
Tallie Two, also from the Wright stable, put up a disappointing performance in the Guineas but may do better over more ground. She has won as 1700m Graduation Plate, and on October 19 narrowly beat Gentle Brook in the 1600m ZRP Fillies Charity Stakes when receiving 8 kgs. Gentle Brook had the upper hand when they met again in the 1800m Champion Fillies Stakes with Tallie Two finishing fourth, 4.75 lengths back, receiving 4 kgs. That was the day Equina was even further behind, and both Equina and Gentle Brook are fancied runners in Sunday’s main feature, the Mercedes-Benz C Class Ipi Tombe Stakes (L).
The Gokhan Terzi trained Eversolucky’s three wins include the Breeders Fillies Mile and the 1600m Jacaranda Tote Free, but she had to settle for third and fourth places in the Fillies Classic and the Guineas. Sunday’s extra 200m could suit Ashaawes daughter.
Corne Spies’s yard will be represented by Autumn J, Snow Call and Second Light. By Second Empire (IRE), Second Light won a 1700m Maiden Plate on February 22 by a mind-boggling 9 lengths. On that alone I give her an outside chance.
Amy Bronkhorst has entered the Judpot filly, Suave Singer, who won her first start over 1000m on November2 and then went on to run an absolute shocker in a 1300m MR 65 Handicap on December 14. She finished 19.25 lengths behind the winner, White Whisper, but she is here to take on Print The Pounds. Trust me, this filly is showing the stable (home of Equina and Gentle Brook) something.
To be honest I am hoping this second leg of Zimbabwe’s Triple Tiara does turn out to be another Print The Pounds/Picalilly rematch – and another of those cliffhanger finishes that Picalilly can provide.
