Half of those nominated for the 1900m Republic Cup to be run at Borrowdale Park on July 16, showed their paces in both the 2000m Castle Tankard and the 1800m OK Grand Challenge.

The stake for the 2016 Republic Cup has been raised from US$ 40 000 to US$ 50 000, which puts this race on a par with the Castle Tankard – an exciting development for owners and trainers.

This year’s Castle Tankard winner, Rock The Country (fifth in the OK) has drawn 13 and is set to carry 55 kgs. OK Grand Challenge winner, Duffi’s Call will carry 53,5 kgs, drawn 11. Once again Flax has been allotted top weight (61 kgs) and has drawn 17.

Two thought provoking entries are Mathematician and Windigo, who finished in the first four in both previous races. Mathematician (54,5 kgs) has drawn the number 3 starting stall, while Windigo (53,5 kgs) has to overcome the widest of draws.

Approval Rating, Thriller In Manila, and relative newcomer Perfect Grace, step up to the 2016 big race plate for the first time.

Perfect Grace Chase Maujean Mr70 1800Photograph Gavin Macleod.. The Amy Bronkhorst trained Perfect Grace with Chase Maujean up won the 1800m Merit Rated 70 Handicap on May 7.

Of course it is early days and it remains to be seen who will be among the Final Acceptors for the Republic Cup.

At this stage Gokhan Goksel Terzii is fielding Rock The Country, Eurakilon, Approval Rating, Super Trouper and Merhaba. Bridget Stidolph also has a strong hand with Duffi’s Call, Mathematician, Flax and Lucky Sam. Kirk Swanson has entered Windigo and Madigan.
