Favourites Few And Far Between

The fancied Full Court, trained by Corne Spies and ridden by Fanie Chambers, won the first race at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, a 1000m Maiden Plate. Punters had to wait for the next Tote favourite to arrive and that was Print the Pounds in the sixth. The Spies yard scored again with Second Light, winner of the 1700m Maiden Plate, with Francois Naude up. The Second Empire (IRE) filly beat Shezawarrior by an astonishing 9 lengths. Bred by Dr A. Aldous, Second Light is owned by Mr T. Spies and is nominated to run in the Silver Slipper at the next meeting.

Full Court, by Albert Hall (GB), was bred by Klawervlei Stud and is also owned by Mr T. Spies.

PRINT THE POUNDS BAGS THE ZIMBABWE GUINEAS

So near and yet so far. Print The Pounds won the Zimbabwe Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown, but Picalilly stole the limelight. The Gharir filly came with her characteristic late challenge from way back, and almost pulled it off. The official winning distance was 0.25 lengths. The A P Answer filly, Print The Pounds, is trained by Bridget Stidolph and was ridden by Derreck David. She was bred by Clifton Stud and runs in the colours of the Sunmark Syndicate. This was Print The Pounds’ fourth consecutive win. Last time out she finished ahead of Picalilly in the Fillies Classic.

Picalilly is owned and was bred in Zimbabwe by Sarah Lumsden. She is trained by Gee Racing, who also sent out the Soar With Eagles gelding, Zita, who finished third. Apart from Zita the fillies had the upper hand as Eversolucky, from the Gokhan Terzi stable, was fourth.

Zimbabwe Guineas – tough test for three-year-olds

Traditionalists expect equine boys to beat equine girls in the main three-year-old Classics but, in the US$9 000 Zimbabwe Guineas (Gr3) to be run over 1600m at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, the fillies could reign supreme.

Alyson Wright’s Gee Racing stable is sitting pretty with the well performed Picalilly and Tallie Two – both sure to be well fancied.  Gokhan Terzi will send out the winner of the Breeders Fillies Mile, Eversolucky, while Bridget Stidolph is responsible for four-time winner Print The Pounds, who triumphed in the recent Fillies Classic.

Of the seven male contenders (all geldings) in this 13-horse line-up only Mica Point, from the Stidolph yard, can boast a feature win over Sunday’s distance. The son of West Man won the 1600m Guineas Trial on January 10.  However Guineas Trial is a bit of a misnomer as it is a Merit Rated Handicap and apprentice allowances may be claimed.

On the day Mica Point carried 52 kgs, beating Tallie Two (57.5 kgs) by 3 lengths; Eversolucky (56.5 kgs) was 4.25 lengths behind him and the Soar With Eagles gelding, Supa Challenge (58,5 kgs) Continue reading

For the second time around

Rock The Country won the US$ 9 500 Breeders Champions Cup, run over 2000m at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, February 8th – for the second year in succession.  By the 1400m mark newcomer to Borrowdale, Two Gun Kid, had established himself as the early leader with Gentle Brook and Killa Man close behind.

Coming into the home straight Killa Man went for the rails and hit the front only to be overtaken by Gentle Brook, who held on gamely until Rock The Country, followed by Orbit War, exploded from midfield – and it was game over.  Rock The Country, partnered by Apprentice Wesley Marwing, won by three lengths.  Orbit War was 1.25 lengths clear of a fast finishing Demitasse, with Gentle Brook in Continue reading

Two winners for Spies

Glastonbury, with Apprentice Collen Storey in the saddle, was an easy winner of the 1100m MR 55 Handicap at Borrowdale Park on February 8. The Right Approach gelding (below) has now completed a hat trick of wins at Borrowdale. He was bred by Wilgerbosdrift and is owned by Messrs F.N. Englezakis and R.P. Macnab,

Later in the afternoon the Corne Spies yard scored again with Amas Amat who beat stablemate Full Court home by three-parts of a length in a 1200m Maiden Plate. Both started at 40/1 and not surprisingly the Pick Six was not won. Both horses are owned by Mr T. Spies and Francois Naude was riding the winner. Amas Amat, by National Emblem, was bred by Klawervlei Stud.

Arrowfield wins convincingly

At the 15th time of asking the A P Arrow filly, Arrowfield, shed her maiden certificate in fine style in the 1600m Maiden Plate for fillies and mares at Borrowdale Park on February 8. Derreck David began moving the filly into contention when approaching the home turn, and soon after the 400m mark it was clear this was Arrowfields’ day.

Arrowfield was saddled by Assistant trainer Penny Fisher of Gee Racing, bred by Northfields Stud (Pty) Ltd, and is owned by Julie Zieve, John Koumides and Robin Bruss.

FIRST RACE, FIRST WIN

When the Horse Chestnut filly, Hunyani, won the 1000m Maiden Juvenile Plate at Borrowdale Park on Sunday it was just the start of a successful afternoon for trainer Bridget Stidolph, jockey Derreck David and part-owner Robin Bruss. Bred by Adv.A.P. Joubert, Hunyani is owned by Alastair Pulford and Robin Bruss. She was Tote Favourite and dominated throughout, despite best efforts from Yesterday Man and Caribbean.

Enjoying the moment

Rock The Country, winner of the Breeders Champions CUp on Sunday, was led in by his trainer Gokhan Terzi with Gengis and Ufuk Goksel. Apprentice Wesley Marwing had the ride. The race was not entirely without incident. Captain’s Tiger was withdrawn by the vet at the start. Copper Bay was slow out of the stalls and then refused to gallop. Orbit War, Demitasse and Gentle Brook filled the minor placings – all carrying less than 54 kgs. The pedometer reading was 22.
