Ipi Tombe going down to the start of the Vodacom Durban July Handicap
…and a chance to relive that dream
MOTA’s $10 000 Ipi Tombe Stakes will be run over 1600m at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, February 14. Fourteen horses have been nominated, including last year’s winner, Super Trouper, and if he stands his ground this people pleaser is quite capable of doing it again.
The great race mare, Ipi Tombe, for whom this annual event is named. is now 18 years old. She is well and happy at Denali Stud in Kentucky, USA, but we will never forget she was bred in Zimbabwe, by Peter Moor of Golden Acres Stud. Zimbabwe’s racing enthusiasts cheered her all the way to her victories in the Vodacom Durban July Handicap and the Dubai Duty Free Handicap – and to this day Mike de Kock has a high regard for Ipi Tombe.
This year Ipi Tombe’s Day is also Valentine’s Day and we are looking forward to a wonderful time in the Ipi Tombe Room with lunch, for those who wanted it, and all the usual fun and games for those who didn’t – plus some prizes.
We hope all of you will turn up on the day – particularly those who enjoyed close ties to Ipi Tombe – and join us in a toast to Zimbabwe’s most famous equine export.
