Sunday’s Guineas Trial Line-Up

Zimbabwe-bred Tandava, by Century Stand (AUS), carries the top weight (60 kgs) in the Guineas Trial to be run over 1600m at Borrowdale Park on Sunday. The three-year-old colt is trained by Gokhan Terzi, is drawn 7 out of 8, and will be ridden by Lance Pagel.

A winner of two from four starts, Tandava (below) has quite a tough task ahead. He ran 2.75 lengths off Call Me Earl in the 1600m Tote Free Handicap and has performed well up the straight in open company.

TAKING ON THE BOYS

Betula Uber, the second of Gokhan Terzi’s runners here, is the only filly in the race. As a two- year-old she won the Breeders Fillies Mile in July,  then in November finished 3.50 lengths off Call Me Earl in the Tote Free Handicap, and last time out was 6.50 lengths behind Windigo over 1800m.

By Ideal World (USA) Betula Uber will carry 52 kgs, is drawn 4 and Juan Paul van der Merwe has the ride. She could surprise.

THIS WOULD BE COOL

The Swanson yard are pinning their hopes on the lightly raced Cool Solution. When the Mullins Bay (GB) colt takes on the other seven runners on Sunday  it will be his first race around the turn. He finished second to Master Of The Sky over 1100m, then won over 1200m, beating subsequent winner Baumgartner.

Drawn 2, Cool Solution will carry 57 kgs and have Francois Herholdt aboard – with plenty of support from his owners. If he is involved in the finish reach for the earplugs.

THINK ABOUT BULLION BAY

Bridget Stidolph will saddle four of the eight Guineas Trial runners, and this quartet includes Bullion Bay, winner of his only start in Harare.

The son of Bankable (IRE) was bred in ZImbabwe but raced six times in Gauteng from 1450m – 1600m for two places. He won a 1100m Maiden Plate at Borrowdale Park on January 16, beating a fast finishing Copper Sky by two lengths.

Bullion Bay is drawn 1, carries 58.5 kgs, and Brendon McNaughton takes the ride again.

DETENTE AN INTERESTING RUNNER

Detente, also from the Stidolph yard and another son of Bankable (IRE), is out of a Galileo (IRE) mare. The three-year-old gelding had three starts in the Western Cape from 1000m – 1600m. He won a 1300m Maiden Plate at Borrowdale in November, finishing 0.25 lengths clear of Baumgartner.

An interesting runner who is bred to do this. Fanie Chambers rides and Detente is drawn 6 and will carry 58.5kgs.

DO NOT IGNORE ROCKY ROAD

Rocky Road‘s two wins include the 1200m TBA Champage Stakes, at two, and he was fourth in the 1600m Tote Free Handicap, finishing 2.50 lengths off the winner.

He is by Soar With Eagles (USA) out of a Sobieski (USA) mare, and will jump from the number 3 starting stall. Kevin Derere will be in the irons and Rocky Road is set to carry 58.5 kgs. He is trained by Bridget Stidolph and was bred in Zimbabwe.

AN UNKNOWN QUANTITY

Al Salaam is an unknown quantity over the 1600m Guineas Trial trip as in his seven starts to date he has not gone beyond 1200m. As a juvenile he beat Sunday’s runner, Betula Uber, over 1000m.

The Mullins Bay (GB) gelding will be ridden by Apprentice Callan Murray, is trained by Bridget Stidolph, has the widest draw, and will carry 52kgs. We will have to wait and see. Weight often counts.

WHAT ABOUT SLICK?

Last but certainly not least, Slick shed his maiden certificate over 1800m, beating Master Of The Sky, and at the last Borrowdale Park race meeting he finished second to Windigo over the same trip. He was four lengths off Call Me Earl in the 1600m Tote Free Handicap run in November but looks to have improved since then.

By West Man (USA) this colt is trained by Amy Bronkhorst and he will carry 55.5 kgs on Sunday. Drawn 5, Slick will be ridden by Raymond Danielson..

THE GUINEAS TRIAL – FACT OR FICTION?

The 1600m Guineas Trial, scheduled main race at Borrowdale Park on January 17, will inevitably set some of us snarling – again.

The beef being, how can this be a Guineas Trial when the race conditions are so different? The Zimbabwe Guineas for all three-year-olds takes place at the end of February and will be run over 1600m at set weights (C & G 58kgs, F 55kgs) with No Apprentice Allowance.

Apprentice Allowances can be claimed in the Guineas Trial (also restricted to three-year-olds) but this is a Merit Rated Handicap, top weight 61 kgs.

At the time of writing 9 horses are nominated for the Guineas Trial. Bridget Stidolph has entered Super Good (MR 83), Bullion Bay (MR 69), Detente (MR 69), Rocky Road (MR 69) and Al Salaam (MR 56). Gokhan Terzi’s nominations are Tandava (MR 72) and Betula Uber (MR 60), while Amy Bronkhorst has gone with Slick (MR 63) and Kirk Swanson with Cool Solution (MR 66). Continue reading

Confabulate is owned by Anna Mason, Gray Neely, Alan Smith, Ron Mhizha, Merlyn Chant and John Koumides, and trained by Kirk Swanson. The Oracy (NZ) gelding was bred by Klawervlei Stud and has now won two races.

IN THE POUNDS SEAT ON SUNDAY

Windigo Herholdt

Francois Herholdt was undoubtedly the man of the moment at Borrowdale Park on Sunday when he rode four winners for the Swanson yard.

He is seen here on Windigo, an easy winner of the 1800m Novice Plate. Well done Francie.

BAUMGARTNER WON WELL

Baumgartner winning decisively

The fancied Black Minnaloushe (USA) colt, Baumgartner, lived up to expectations at Borrowdale on Sunday, winning the 1700m Maiden Plate. Finlay (Fortune) finished 1.25 lengths behind and he was followed by Magnificent Mile and Expensive.

The three-year-old winner is trained by Kirk Swanson, owned by John Koumides, and ridden by Francois Herholdt. He was bred by the Haras Del Carmo Close Corporation.

THE MUTINEER CAME RIGHT ON SUNDAY

The Gokhan Terzi trained The Mutineer showed his field a clean pair of heels when winning the 1200m Merit Rated 70 Handicap by 2.50 lengths. Juan Paul van der Merwe was in the irons.

The six-year-old gelding was followed across the line by Porterhouse, Lost Island and Gotago and has now won three races. Bred by Summerhill Stud, the son of Mullins Bay (GB) is owned by Mrs A. Marwing.

SURPRISES FOR PUNTERS

Gokhan Terzi saddled two winners at Borrowdale Park on Sunday – surprising quite a few punters in the process.

First up was The Mutineer in the 1200m Merit Rated 70 Handicap, starting price 20/1, beating stable mate Porterhouse, Lost Island and Gotago. Juan Paul van der Merwe had the ride and the Mullins Bay (GB) gelding is owned by Mrs A. Marwing, and was bred by Summerhill Stud.

Anthony’s Lazer (below), with Brendon McNaughton aboard, won the last race of the day, an 1100m MR 50 Handicap, starting price 40/1. The Tiger Dance (USA) colt was involved in a tight finish with Flintstone, winning margin 0.50 lengths.

Anthony’s Lazer is owned by John Koumides and was bred by Druk-My-Niet Stud.

FIRST WINNER AT BORROWDALE PARK IN 2016

Bridget Stidolph saddled the first winner at Borrowdale Park in 2016 when Bullion Bay won the 1100m Maiden Plate, finishing clear of Copper Sky, Ladies First and Nemba Beach.

This was the Bankable (IRE) gelding’s first race in Zimbabwe. Brendon McNaughton was in the saddle, and Bullion Bay is owned by Scott Buchan, Neil Evans and Merlyn Chant. Colin Bird is the successful breeder.

WINDIGO WON EASILY

Hot favourite Windigo won the 1800m Novice Plate by two lengths, beating Slick, Al Cobalena and Sky. The Windrush gelding is owned by Colin Bird and he has now won both his starts at Borrowdale Park.

Assistant Trainer Thomas Mason and Willard Mujuru from the Swanson yard led the four-year-old gelding in. He was bred by The Alchemy and Francois Herholdt had the winning ride.

ROAD TO DUBAI BY A WHISKER

Road To Dubai’s triumph in the Hachiman Sprint at Borrowdale Park on Sunday was the cherry on the top for the Swanson yard. The stable sent out four winners during the afternoon.

Last time out Road To Dubai won the HRIB Gold Cup and victory in the Hachiman Sprint, albeit by a whisker, made him winner of two of the four legs in the Sprinters Series. He held on to beat a fast finishing Pacifica by .05 lengths.

The four-year-old son of The Sheik is owned by John Koumides and was bred by Scott Bros. Francois Herholdt was in the irons and he also piloted the other three Swanson winners.

PLENTY TO SHOUT ABOUT

Approval Rating (nearest) Pegwell Bay

ABOVE: Approval Rating (nearest the camera) and Pegwell Bay involved in a tight finish over 1000m on September 6. Photograph by Gavin Macleod.

The  Hachiman Sprint to be run over 1100m at Borrowdale Park is the fourth and final leg of the Sprinters Series.

This began on September 6 with the 1000m AFZ Borrowdale Sprint, won by Approval Rating, and was followed by the 1200m HRIB Gold Cup where Road To Dubai scored.

Super Trouper won the third leg, the 1450m Zimbabwe Challenge, on December 13.

On Sunday Approval Rating and Road To Dubai return to action, together with Thriller In Manila, Picalilly, Pegwell Bay and Gentle Brook, all of whom made their presence felt at some time during the series.

Newton Power finished fifth to Super Trouper in the Zimbabwe Challenge, and although Nimble Dancer did not shape in the HRIB, two of his four wins were over the 1100m trip so he could do better here.

It is tempting to regard those already mentioned as main players but for the two unknown quantities, Atso’s Scheme and Pacifica, also in the line-up.

Atso’s Scheme won three races for Corne Spies at Borrowdale, from 1200m to 1800m, but he has not raced for a year. The four-year-old gelding is now in the Stidolph yard, is set to carry 59,5 kgs and Fanie Chambers has the ride.

I am sure the three-year-old filly, Pacifica, is here for a purpose. A daughter of Lecture (USA), she won three races in Gauteng from 1200m to 1450m, and this will be her first race in Zimbabwe. Andrew Fortune will be in the irons for Gokhan Terzi.

This may be a tough ask – Pacifica will carry 57.5 kgs and has mainly met fillies and mares previously – but watch the betting.

Terzi has a strong hand in this field of 10 as he also saddles Approval Rating, sure to be fancied despite top weight of 63 kgs, and Newton Power.

I expect all of Road To Dubai, Thriller In Manila, Nimble Dancer, Picalilly and Pegwell Bay to be in with a loud shout, so it will be a good race.

WINDIGO HARD TO OPPOSE

On November 28 Windigo won a 1600m Maiden Plate in breathtaking style, beating Promising by 9 lengths. The Windrush (USA) gelding runs at Borrowdale on Sunday in the 1800m Novice Plate and a repeat of his previous effort will make him hard to oppose.

All of Muhannad, Captain Grant, Rawedge and Al Cobalena could make a race of it on their day, but I see the two three-year-old fillies, Sky and Betula Uber as the main dangers.

Unfortunately Andrew Fortune is expected to put up 1 kg overweight on Sky.
