THE ZIMBABWE OAKS MIGHT BE INTERESTING

There are nine acceptors for the 2000m Zimbabwe Oaks, and it is hard to look beyond the Bridget Stidolph trained Duffi’s Call. Hopefully Gokhan Terzi’s bunch (which includes Ladies First and Betula Uber) will be able to make a race of it.

It is interesting to note that Andrew Fortune will ride Belle Epoque for Terzi. This lightly raced Seventh Rock (AUS) filly, a winner on April 24 over 1200m, has yet to race around the turn, but JP van der Merwe, in the irons that day, is down to ride Myths And Legends, for the yard.

By Argonaut out of a Fort Wood (USA) mare, Myths And Legends also won her last start over 1800m, beating subsequent winner Standpoint. Van Der Merwe was on Myths And Legends.

First race at Borrowdale Park on Sunday is due off at 12 15 and the Zimbabwe Oaks will be run at 15 10.

LET’S HAVE SOME FUN – and talk about ratings

Let’s have a bit of fun – and talk about Merit Ratings.  Most of the time I try to avoid thinking about them (bad for blood pressure) but with no preconceived ideas will check out who got what after the last race meeting.

Starting with the Castle Tankard where the horses finishing in the first five were Rock The Country (MR 84), Mathematician (MR 88), Windigo (MR 79), Eurakilon (MR 95) and Flax (MR 112).

The winner, Rock The Country, went up by 8 points to 92; Mathematician is now on MR 94 (plus 6); Windigo is rated MR 88 (plus 9); Eurakilon remains on MR 95, and Flax (fifth) on 112. Can’t criticise that too much, I suppose, but Mathematician, a three-year-old, has only won three races to Rock The Country’s and Eurakilon’s seven wins apiece. The cost of winning two legs of the Triple Crown, no doubt.

I cannot resist mentioning Merhaba here. His last start was in the Tankard where he set the pace, finishing second to last. He went into the race on 72 and has now dropped to 69.

Like Mathematician Merhaba won both the SA Bloodstock 2000 and the Zimbabwe Derby in 2015. His next outing was in the OK Grand Challenge (index figure 88 the same as he had for the Derby) and he finished 10th, 6.25 lengths behind Yer-Maan. Sad to relate Merhaba has not won a race since.

The first feature on Sunday’s card was the 1000m TBA Sales Stakes won easily by Wylde Style, who has triumphed in two of her three starts. According to the race card none of the runners went into this race with a Merit Rating – regardless of whether they had won a race or not.

Wylde Style, the winner, and Determination (third) are rated 72, the filly Jinx Johnson (second) is on 67, while Lady Carina (fourth) is on 70. The minor placed horses have all won once. Those who ran unplaced in the Sales Stakes come in at 56 (Rebel Soldier and Cream And Honey, a winner), or 66 – Devil In Command and Rhythmical Reply, also a winner.

Now let’s look at a couple of Maiden Plates …and I promise I haven’t checked out the ratings – yet. Supa Wonder won the 1000m Maiden Plate followed by Sulawesi (three parts of a length back), Nemba Beach (2.75) and Piece Of Pizzaz (8.75).

Supa Wonder was having his second start and is now rated 60, the first-timer Sulawesi has not been given a rating, Nemba Beach has gone up to 49 from 47, while Piece Of Pizzaz drops to 45 from 47.

The 1800m Maiden Plate was a thriller with Standpoint getting up to beat front-running Barbarian by a whisker. This was Barbarian’s first race at Borrowdale Park. He had four starts in South Africa for two places and was rated 72. Standpoint had previously raced three times in Harare for one place and a rating of 57. And there’s sure to be many reasons for that seeming discrepancy such as a recently imported South African horse etc.

In a Maiden Plate index figures don’t matter anyway – but it would if these horses met in a handicap. Believe it or not Standpoint has been raised by one point to 58 – Barbarian stays on 72.

To conclude this somewhat uninteresting exercise we will take a peek at the MR 90 Handicap over 1200m where Newton Power, receiving 1 kg, beat Road To Dubai by half a length, followed by Tamarind (1.25), Approval Rating (1.50 lengths back carrying 63 kgs), and Picalilly (2.25).

Newton Power goes from 82 to 85 and Road To Dubai from 84 to 86. Both are seven-time winners. Two-time winner Tamarind who finished third, and was having his first start at Borrowdale, goes up by two to 74, while poor old Approval Rating stays on 96 and Picalilly on 89.

The real winners here were probably the also rans. Atso’s Scheme and Gentle Brook dropped two points and The Mutineer and Carla The Rebel dropped one.

Those of you who are so inclined can now spend a couple of hours looking for my mistakes. Have never been too good with figures!

WATCH OUT FOR WYLDE STYLE

The West Man (USA) filly Wylde Style, bred in ZImbabwe by her owner Peter Moor, was an easy winner of the 1000m TBA Sales Stakes at Borrowdale on Sunday – beating stable mate Jinx Johnson by two lengths. Determination and Lady Carina filled the remaining places. This two-year-old ran second first time out and has now won two of three starts.

Wylde Style is trained by Amy Bronkhorst and was ridden by Chase Maujean – a winning combination which fired again with Perfect Grace for the Centaur Syndicate in the 1800m MR 70 Handicap.

SUPER WIN FOR SUPA WONDER

Supa Wonder left the maidens at the second time of asking when beating first timer Sulawesi at Borrowdale Park on Sunday.

By Soar With Eagles (USA) and out of the successful broodmare Dupa Dear, Supa Wonder is trained by Kirk Swanson and was ridden by Francie Herholdt. He is owned by Paul, Ursula and Sean Gorringe, Alan and Murray Smith, Vikas Patel, Gary Carter and Paula Lewis – all there to welcome the three-year-old in the parade ring. Supa Wonder was bred in Zimbabwe by Sandford Farm.

A GOOD DAY FOR GOKHAN – and Rock The Country

It was a memorable day for Gokhan Terzi on Sunday. He not only won the $50 000 Castle Tankard at Borrowdale Park with Rock The Country, he also saddled two more winners – Standpoint and Newton Power.

Rock The Country, bred by Hallmark Thoroughbreds and owned by Gengiz Goksel, was ridden by Hennie Greyling. The seven-year-old Western Winter (USA) gelding relentlessly mowed down the opposition when it seemed Mathematician had victory within his grasp.

The winning margin was 0.50 lengths with Windigo, third. Only a length separated the first three horses and Eurakilon, who was giving them all 3.5 kgs, 3.50 lengths off the winner. Flax, burdened with 60kgs, finished fifth, four lengths behind Rock The Country.

Kirk Swanson and Francois Herholdt won the first race a 1000m Maiden Plate, with the fancied Soar With Eagles (USA) gelding, Supa Wonder, bred by Sandford Farm in Zimbabwe.

Locally bred horses won three of the seven races carded which was quite an achievement as they are now outnumbered by South African imports. Of the 79 runners on Sunday only 10 were bred in this country.

One of the most exciting finishes came in the fifth race, a 1700m Maiden Plate, when Standpoint, by Century Stand (AUS) and bred by Rumbavu Stud in Harare, got up to beat hot favourite Barbarian by 0.05 lengths. Full marks to jockey Lance Pagel for a sterling effort. Barbarian (ex Mike de Kock) looked set to make every post a winning one.

Amy Bronkhorst sent out two winners during the afternoon. Wylde Style, owned and bred by P.J. Moor in Zimbabwe, was an easy winner of the TBA Sales Stakes and later the Antonius Pius (USA) gelding, Perfect Grace, won the 1800m MR 70 Handicap for the Centaur Syndicate. Chase Maujean rode both horses.

The Centaur Syndicate (nominee Craig Dankwerts), first registered in 1976, celebrated its 40th anniversary last week.

Juan Paul van der Merwe had a winning ride on Newton Power in the 1200m MR 90 Handicap –another close finish involving Road To Dubai. Apprentice Calvin Habib scored on Aquaba for the Stidolph yard in the 1000m MR 55 Handicap.

The next Borrowdale Park race meeting is on Sunday, May 22, and features the Zimbabwe Oaks (L).

CASTLE TANKARD 2016 – MOMENT OF TRUTH

rock country - cASTLE tANKARD gAVIN

Rock The Country, with Hennie Greyling up, came with a determined and spectacular run up the outside to catch Mathematician, folllowed by Windigo, a stride from the finish.

By Western Winter (USA) out of a Northern Guest (USA) mare, the seven-year-old gelding is owned by Gengiz Goksel, trained by Gokhan Terzi, and this was his sixth win. He was bred by Hallmark Thoroughbreds.

Mathematician (second) is trained by Bridget Stidolph and was ridden by Brendon McNaughton. Windigo was sent out by Kirk Swanson and Keangon de Melo had the ride.

CASTLE TANKARD 2016 – A CONUNDRUM

We have a conundrum (dictionary definition “Riddle, Hard Question). Three of the 13 Castle Tankard runners will be having their first race at Borrowdale Park when they take part in this prestigious event on Saturday.

The Western Winter (USA) gelding, Lava Flow, trained by Penny Fisher, has only raced once in Harare, in the Independence Trophy won by Eurakilon, so I place this four-year-old out of an Elliodor mare, also in the mysterious category. He has won twice at Turffontein from 1400m to 1800m and ran second twice over 2000m, the Tankard distance, to Oriental Blue and Save The Rhino.

Penny also saddles Tallie Two, drawn 3, and always capable of putting in a flourish at the finish.

The inclusion of Flax by Silvano (GER), who achieved something approaching cult status with nine prestigous wins at Kranje, has skewed the weights somewhat. If Merit Ratings mean anything and if he is the same horse he was in Singapore then he has to win.

Kirk Swanson will saddle Silva Hawk, also by Silvano (GER) and out of a Jallad (USA) mare. The five-year-old gelding has won three times in KZN and Gauteng from 1400m to 1600m. He has yet to try 2000m but on breeding should get this trip and Swanson knows what he is doing over distance. Kirk has also entered Windigo.

The Ormond Ferraris trained Fah Fee arrived in Harare this week and has settled in well according to Gavin Macleod who is in charge in Harare. By Ideal World (USA), and a four time winner who has placed up to 2000m, Fah Fee shouldn’t be overlooked.

In addition to Flax, Bridget Stidolph also sends out Zimbabwe Derby winner Mathematician, the only three-year-old in the race, Print The Pounds and Lucky Sam – all of whom have claims to fame.

Eurakilon, Rock The Country and Merhaba represent the Gokhan Terzi yard. Eurakilon has come into his own lately – he will be receiving 4.5 kgs from Flax and should give a good account of himself.

Former Tankard winner Equina, from the Amy Bronkhorst yard, will only carry 52 kgs. She hasn’t done much lately but should appreciate this good galloping weight. Equina is a daughter of Silvano (GER) who is very well represented in this field.

The US$50 000 Castle Tankard is the race all Borrowdale Park owners and trainers really want to win, and the pressure will be on from start to finish. It’s always a thrilling race but particularly hard to pick the winner this year. – I think.

PHOTOGRAPH: Lucky Sam would be a popular winner and Karl Zechner has the ride – he steered Abishiri into the history books at Turfontein last Saturday.

FLAX – A MYSTERY?

The South African-bred Flax, weighted to carry 60 kgs in Saturday’s $50 000 Castle Tankard, remains a mystery as far as most punters in Zimbabwe are concerned.

However, thanks to a local super sleuth we have some information. By Silvano (GER) the story about Flax which appears below was written after the nine-year-old’s last race at Kranji. (He raced 29 times in Singapore, for nine 1sts, two 2nds, four 3rds and two 4ths…earnings S$ 1,291,144.05)

OLD WARRIOR FLAX NOT OVER THE HILL     Video of Flax races in Singapore

20/09/2015

With his stunning win in the $200,000 Group 3 Committee’s Prize (1600m) on Sunday, game nine-year-old Flax has pulled off a feat not many horses at Kranji or elsewhere can boast on their resume – win four Group races in four consecutive years.
Ironically, that hardiness and longevity in the South African-bred has come through only in the latter years after his initial racing career was plagued by a rare proneness to dehydration. One of the most heart-rending but at the same time inspiring moments of racing at Kranji was witnessed when vets, officials and bystanders alike chipped in to douse Flax with buckets of water after he fell in a heap a few metres after he flew home to nail a 1400m race in 2012. After a few minutes, he got back on his feet to everybody’s relief.
But of course, his proudest moments have far outshone this one Achilles’ heel, when against all odds, the little prize fighter of Dennis and Gael Evans (not much of him around 440kgs!) has overcome his heat stress issues with astounding victories at the highest level.

FAH FEE SAFE AND WELL

Castle Tankard runner Fah Fee has arrived safely in Harare.

Gavin Macleod reports “A very good trip with Equine Carriers up to Beitbridge, through both Customs in one hour twenty minute, with agents Cargo Services and Freight World on the ball.

Faa Fee

Fah Fee at Borrowdale Park

“Overnight spent with Chris Lee at Lion & Elephant, who has built new stables and paddocks for horses.

“An easy trip up to Harare, unloaded at Borrowdale at exactly one o’clock, followed by a long walk and head straight into the manger.

“On Wednesday morning Fah Fee worked an easy 1600m on the heavy sand and will do a strong 1600m on Thursday morning .

“Just a nice workman type horse.”

Fah Fee, a four-year-old Ideal World (USA) gelding, trained by Ormond Ferraris, has won four races at the Vaal and Turffontein from 1200m to 1600m, and has been placed up to 2000m. In January he was second to Stonehenge over 1800m finishing 3.30 lengths ahead of Saturday’s runner Lava Flow who was in receipt of 1 kg.

Also over 1800m, in January 2015, Fah Fee finished fifth, 2.75 lengths off Ertijaal (AUS), and that day Deputy Jud, Greek Legend and French Navy filled the placings. He carried 56 kgs as did Ertijaal, Greek Legend and French Navy. Deputy Jud was on 54 kgs.

Another interesting runner. Apprentice Callan Murray rides on Saturday.
