Romantic Balladeer, who finished behind Princeton Tiger at the September 20 race meeting, managed to turn the tables on Sunday when the pair met again in the 1200m MR 55 Handicap.

TERZI’S WINNING STREAK CONTINUES

Training honours at Borrowdale Park on Sunday once again went to Glenwood Racing, with Gokhan Terzi saddling three of the winners on the 7-race card.

The three-year-old filly, Fashion World by Global One (AUS), graduated from the maidens at the second time of asking over 1200m. She is owned by Mr S. Armstrong, bred by Bosworth Farm Stud and was ridden by Andrew Fortune. First timer Domboshava was 0.75 lengths behind, followed by the fancied, Sky, and With Distinction.

Terzi and Fortune scored again when Bankers Blues finished in front of Nugget Effect in the 1600m Merit Rated 65 Handicap – the tightest finish of the afternoon.

Bankers Blues, by Greys Inn (USA), was bred by the Estate Late Mr R.B.Wallace, and is owned by Dave Rosser and Gengiz Goksel.

Apprentice Wesley Marwing rode Agnetha for Terzi in the 1600m Merit Rated 50 Handicap. The six-year old mare by Miesque’s Approval, was bred by Dr I.R. Heyns and this was Mr S. Armstrong’s second winner. Agnetha has now won three races. In what looked to be a very open race she was Tote Favourite (4/1) and Delta Special, Muhannad and Al Cobalena came in behind her.

PRINT THE POUNDS MADE IT LOOK EASY

Print The Pounds, Zimbabwe’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly during the 2014/15 season, won the 1800m ZNA Charity Handicap at Borrowdale Park on Sunday.

The daughter of AP Answer (USA) finished 1.25 lengths clear of Rock The Country, with another talented four-year-old filly, Tallie Two, edging Thriller In Manila into fourth place.

Super Trouper and Equina, as expected, headed the betting but failed to justify this support. Super Trouper (fifth) was 3.50 lengths behind the winner, with Equina even further back.

The 2015 Zimbabwe Derby winner, Merhaba, led the field into the home straight with Equina tracking, and Rock The Country and “the Thriller” always handy. Print The Pounds was mid-field with Tallie Two and Super Trouper the back markers.

At the 400m mark Equina, with Apprentice Serino Moodley up, took over the lead, and the race was on. However about 200m from the wire both Equina and Merhaba fell out the back door. Print The Pounds was well in command 100m out, although Tally Two was beginning to unwind and Rock The Country and Thriller In Manilla remained in contention.

EQUINA VERY HARD TO OPPOSE

Equina won the 1800m ZNA Charity Handicap in 2014 and should collect these laurels once again when she lines up with seven other contenders at Borrowdale Park on Sunday.

The six-year-old daughter of Silvano (GER) will be going for a hat-trick having won the $40 000 Republic Cup (GR3) over 1900m, and the 1400m Breeders Sprint, in July. Claiming Apprentice Serino Moodley teamed up with Equina for the Breeders Sprint, thereby reducing her set weight to 53.5kgs, and she beat Super Trouper (conceding 6.5kgs) by 0.05 lengths.

Moodley has the ride again in the ZNA Charity Handicap so former big-time opponents, Super Trouper, Thriller In Manila, Rock The Country and Two Gun Kid, all have heaps of work to do.

They competed in the 1800m OK Grand Challenge won by Yer-Maan in June, 2015. That day Thriller In Manila (second) finished 1.5 lengths in front of Equina (fourth) when in receipt of 3 kgs. Rock The Country (third) also received 3 kgs from Equina, and Super Trouper finished fifth, one length behind Equina while giving her 0.5 kgs.

On Sunday Equina will receive 1.5 kgs from Thriller In Manila, while meeting Rock The Country at level weights. Super Trouper will be giving the mare 4 kgs.

PRINT THE POUNDS IS BACK

Almost every race at Borrowdale Park on Sunday includes at least one runner who featured at the last race meeting so it’s tempting to assume they will keep up the good work. This certainly applies in the main race, the US$ 8 000 Springvale House Sable Flyers (L).

Gentle Brook, second to Casey’s Dance in the 2014 Sable Flyers, carries top weight again. The distance of this race for fillies and mares has been increased from 1200m to 1300m, which doesn’t rule out Gentle Brook, but stable companion, Pegwell Bay, could very well be the main danger.

On September 6 both mares ran in the 1000m AFZ Charity Borrowdale Sprint won by Approval Rating, where Pegwell Bay, 1kg better off with Gentle Brook, was a close second. On Sunday Gentle Brook, who finished midfield last time out, will be giving Pegwell Bay an additional 3kgs.

GOOD VIBES AT FIRST MEETING OF BORROWDALE PARK 2015/16 SEASON

Approval Rating and Andrew Fortune lived up to expectations in the 1000m AFZ Charity Borrowdale Sprint at Borrowdale Park on Sunday when the Gokhan Terzi-trained gelding flew up to beat Pegwell Bay by 0.50 lengths in a thrilling finish.

The six-year-old son of Miesque’s Approval, bred by Scott Bros and owned by Mr S. Armstrong, carried 61.5 kgs and finished like an express train. Briefly there were concerns the top sprinter had “gone out the back door” but once he got his act together Approval Rating justified his 13/20 starting price and he is now a 10-time winner.

Picalilly and Thriller In Manila were quick out the stalls and onto the pace, and Pegwell Bay was right up there. In the closing stages it seemed Pegwell Bay would win, then along came Approval Rating, clearly back to his best. The track was fast and Approval Rating’s time of 56.62 seconds was not too far off the Course Record of 56.01 set by Sports Hero in July 2013, when carrying 55 kgs. Continue reading
