HE ALMOST HAD IT ALL

Myths & Legends (JPvd) and Standpoint (Pagel)

Gengiz Goksel (centre) owns both Myths and Legends (on the right) and Standpoint who finished first and second in the 1800m Maiden Plate.

Gokhan Terzi trains both horses and in addition to saddling the Independence Trophy winner, Eurakilon, Gokhan won the last race on Sunday with Anthony’s Lazer.

JP van der Merwe rode Myths And Legends, the winner, while Lance Pagel was 1.75 lengths back on Standpoint. Myths And Legends is a three-year-old Argonaut filly bred by Dr I.R. Heyns.

Karl Zechner steered the Toreador gelding. Go Galaxy (above), to victory in the 1000m Maiden Plate at Borrowdale on Sunday. The three-year-old is owned by the Equisynd Syndicate and Bridget Stidolph saddled a second winner for this syndicate in the following race.

Star Dance with Fanie Chambers up took the 2000m MR 55 Handicap from stable companions Captain Grant and Sea Clipper. Starting prices 20/1, 14/1 and 20/1 respectively – so with Muhannad (9/2) in fourth place this was a quartet worth winning..

WYLDE STYLE…BY HALF THE RACECOURSE

Wylde Style Chase Maujean

Amy Bronkhorst saddled the first two horses past the post in the 1000m Juvenile Plate at Borrowdale Park on Sunday. The winner, Wylde Style, finished six lengths clear of stablemate Jinx Johnson.

By West Man (USA) Wylde Style is owned and was bred by Peter Moor of Golden Acres Stud. Chase Maujean was in the irons.

WELL DONE EURAKILON

Eurakilon Pagel - MTC

The Gokhan Terzi-trained Eurakilon established himself as a serious Castle Tankard contender when winning the 1600m Independene Trophy at Borrowdale Park on Sunday. He was followed across the line by the three-year-old Call Me Earl (Wow!), Lucky Sam and Print The Pounds.

The son of Classic Flag is out of a Western Winter (USA) mare and was bred byMessrs B.H. and Arne J. Botha and Mrs M.E. Botha. Regular jockey Lance Pagel was in the irons.

Eurakilon is owned by Gengiz Goksel, Grant Littleford, Paul Rugg and Spencer Murray. The six-year-old gelding is now a seven-time winner.

FOLLOW THE BLOOD

There are seven competitive races at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, with the main race, the Bloodstock South Africa 2000 no exception.

All eight runners have some claim to fame with regard to pedigree, if not form. Most have not raced beyond 1600m, although Finlay and Magnificent Mile finished second and third respectively behind Setswana over 1900m on January 31 – which is encouraging.

Finlay is by Go Deputy (US) out of a Western Winter (USA) mare, while Magnificent Mile (below), the son of Ashaawes (USA) out of a Nissr (USA) mare should handle the 2000m trip with ease.

This will be an interesting race and I haven’t given up on Call Me Earl completely, despite a disappointing run in the Zimbabwe Guineas. That 1600m event was won by Pacifica, with Sunday’s runner, Super Good, second.

GOTAGO NOW SEVEN-TIME WINNER

When Norbert Takawira was stood down after a fall, Brendon McNaughton picked up the ride and won the 1300m Borrowdale Stud MR 80 Handicap with Gotago, narrowly beating Porterhouse and Newton Power.

The son of Kitalpha (USA) has won seven races, is owned by John Koumides, C. John Smith and Amanda and Heinrich von Pezold, and is trained by Kirk Swanson.

This was the second win for the Swanson stable on Sunday – and a second win for McNaughton who won the TBA Silver Slipper with Duffi’s Call.

Francois Herholdt was unwell and could not ride at Borrowdale on Sunday. He was replaced by Apprentice C. Ngcobo who won the 1700m MR 55 Handicap on Nugget Effect for the Swanson stable.

By Jay Peg and bred by Normandy Stud, Nugget Effect has now won three races for owner Colin Bird. He finished 0.10 lengths ahead of a fast finishing Noble Peer (Chambers), a recent arrival in Zimbabwe now trained by Penny Fisher.

FIRM FAVOURITE WINS THE THIRD

Magnificent Mile, starting price 14/10, won the 1600m Maiden Plate, third race at Borrowdale on Sunday. The Ashaawes (USA) gelding is out of a Nissr (USA) mare and was bred by Geoff Armitage.

This was Gokhan Terzi’s first winner that afternoon – he later scored with Eurakilon in the Breeders Champion Cup (L) and shared training honours with Kirk Swanson who also saddled two winners on Sunday.

This was Magnificent Mile’s seventh start, having previously placed four times. He was ridden by JP van der Merwe and is owned by Mr S. Armstrong.

SECOND WIN FOR ZITA

The 1200m Novice Plate got off to a false start at Borrowdale Park on Sunday which resulted in Copper Sky, Major Vaughan and Bullion Bay being scratched.

Zita, with Ryan Munger up, won this race the second time around for the Penny Fisher yard, with Lake Nakuru, Royal Revenge and Shezawarrior filling the minor placings.

By Soar With Eagles (USA) and bred in Zimbabwe by the Spotted Pig Stud, Zita is owned by Messrs B.M.MClauchlan, M.G. Charlton, K.P.Fallon, A.C. Fisher, K.H. Fisher and Dr K.A. O’Connor.

THEY GOT THE CREAM – WITH SOME HONEY

Apprentice Stalon Sawere rode the Tamburlaine (IRE) filly, Cream And Honey, for trainer Amy Bronkhorst in the 1100m Maiden Juvenile Plate – and won. This was some consolation for shenanigans at the start which resulted in Amy’s more fancied runner, Wylde Style, being declared a non-runner.

The Bronkhorst stable also sent out Elektra, placed second. Golden Mystery, ex Ormond Ferraris and now with Gavin Macleod ran third and the Fisher trained son of Fencing Master (GB), Minister D’Fence, was fourth.

Cream And Honey, another first-timer, is owned and was bred by Peter Moor.

WELL DONE JK AND PATRICIA

R7 in memory Bill Wakefield Gavin

Patricia Wakefield presenting the trophy to John Koumides.

The last race at Borrowdale Park on Sunday, a 1300m MR 80 Handicap, was run in honour of the late Bill Wakefield of Borrowdale Stud. Prizes were donated and presented to the winning connections by his widow, Patricia Wakefield, seen here with one of the winning owners, John Koumides.

This race provided one of the best finishes of the day with Gotago finishing 0.10 lengths ahead of Porterhouse, followed by Newton Power (0.35) and The Mutineer (1.35).

The seven-year-old Kitalpha (USA) gelding is trained by Kirk Swanson and this was a chance ride for Brendon McNaughton who stood in for Norbert Takawira who fell with Stirling Road earlier in the afternoon. Gotago is owned by Heinrich and Amanda von Pezold, C. John Smith and John Koumides, and was bred by the Von Pezolds.

EURAKILON – FOR SURE

IMG_1035.jpg

Eurakilon, a son of Classic Flag, registered his first win in Zimbabwe in the 2000m Breeders Champion Cup (L) at Borrowdale Park on Sunday.

Trained by Gokhan Terzi and with Lance Pagel in the irons, the six-year-old gelding beat his rival, Print The Pounds, by a length, with stable mate Rock The Country, third, and the Penny Fisher-trained Tallie Two, fourth.

Now a six-time winner, Eurakilon is owned by Gengiz Goksel, Grant Littleford, Spencer Murray and Paul Rugg.

ON TRACK FOR TRIPLE TIARA

After her victories in the Fillies Classic and Sunday’s TBA Silver Slipper, the AP Answer (USA) filly, Duffi’s Call, is on track to take the Triple Tiara if she can also collect the 2000m Zimbabwe Oaks.

Owned by the Sunmark Racing Syndicate and trained by Bridget Stidolph, Duffi’s Call, with Brendon McNaughton up, left the field for dead shortly after turning into the home straight. Pacifica was chasing but it was over bar the shouting – winning margin 5 lengths.

Betula Uber and Ladies First ran third and fourth.
